Brazil calls for stronger Latin American unity against external interference
At a meeting of foreign ministers from the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) held during the high-level segment of the UN General Assembly, Brazilian Foreign Minister Vieira called on Latin American and Caribbean countries to strengthen regional solidarity to ensure respect for sovereignty and reject any form of external interference. Vieira stated that Brazil cannot accept external interference under any pretext. Failure to collectively respond to intimidation is tantamount to a permanent invitation to new interference. Currently, the Latin American and Caribbean region is facing interference from external military forces, with the United States deploying warships, submarines, and military personnel around Venezuela, actions reminiscent of a repeat of the history of the 19th and 20th centuries. Vieira stated that designating criminal groups as terrorist targets could provide a pretext for arbitrary armed aggression in violation of the UN Charter, setting a "dangerous precedent" and threatening regional geopolitical stability. Vieira emphasized that CELAC is a key forum for promoting the eradication of hunger and poverty, promoting development, and strengthening infrastructure for regional integration. He proposed the establishment of a working group to promote dialogue with other countries and regions to more effectively present the position and interests of Latin America and the Caribbean on the international stage.
