Meta challenges EU regulatory fees on tech giants
Meta Platforms has filed a lawsuit with Europe's second highest court, challenging the EU's regulatory fees on tech giants, criticizing their calculation methods as opaque, excessive and unfair. According to the Digital Services Act (DSA), which will come into effect in 2022, 18 large online platforms, including Meta and TikTok, must pay a regulatory fee equivalent to 0.05% of their annual global net income to cover the EU Commission's regulatory costs for enforcing the law. The fee is calculated based on each company's monthly active users and its profit and loss in the previous fiscal year. The EU's second highest court is expected to make a ruling next year.
