Toyota chairman says willing to import U.S.-made cars to Japan

Toyota Motor Chairman Akio Toyoda said he is open to importing cars made by the company in the United States to Japan. "There are many models that are not sold in Japan," Toyoda said recently. Although Toyoda did not disclose the specific models that will be imported to Japan, he is believed to be considering launching the Camry sedan, as well as pickup trucks and other models. The Camry is no longer produced and sold in Japan. Under the agreement, American-made passenger cars that are guaranteed to be safe under Japanese standards can be imported without additional safety testing. Toyoda's remarks are based on this aspect of the deal. If Toyota imports products made in the United States to Japan, the US trade deficit may be reduced. Toyoda said that because the tariff agreement makes it easier to import American-made cars, the range of choices will increase, "which is good for consumers."
