On August 1st, a Florida jury ruled that the American electric car manufacturer Tesla was partially liable for a fatal 2019 crash involving a Model S equipped with Autopilot. The jury also ordered the company to pay approximately $243 million in damages to the family of a woman killed and another injured person. The verdict included $129 million in compensatory damages (of which Tesla was held 33% liable) and $200 million in punitive damages, for a total of approximately $243 million. Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that day that Tesla would appeal the Florida jury's verdict.
