South Korea's exports fell 1.3% in May from a year earlier

South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy released data on May's import and export trends on the 1st. The export value in May fell by 1.3% year-on-year to 57.27 billion US dollars. This is the first time in four months that South Korea's exports have declined year-on-year since January this year. By item, semiconductor exports increased by 21.2% year-on-year to 13.8 billion US dollars, setting a record for the same month in all previous years. Mobile phone exports increased by 30% year-on-year, driving wireless communication equipment exports to increase by 3.9% year-on-year to 1.3 billion US dollars. Bio-health increased by 4.5% year-on-year to 1.4 billion US dollars. Ship exports increased by 4.3% to 2.2 billion US dollars. In contrast, automobile exports fell by 4.4% year-on-year to 6.2 billion US dollars. It is noteworthy that due to the operation of Hyundai Motor Group's new plant in Georgia, South Korea's automobile exports to the United States fell sharply by more than 30% year-on-year. Petroleum products and petrochemical exports fell by 20.9% and 20.8% respectively to 3.6 billion US dollars and 3.2 billion US dollars.
