Tesla has received approval to begin testing its autonomous vehicles with safety drivers in Arizona, a key step in the company's expansion of its self-driving taxi service beyond Austin and into cities and states. The electric car maker first contacted the Arizona Department of Transportation in late June to begin the certification process for its autonomous ride-sharing service, which the department first confirmed to the media. Tesla informed the department that its goal was to launch the service in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
